Bruno Mantovani - Bug

This contemporary work for clarinet by French composer Bruno Mantovani was premiered in 1999. The piece was inspired by the Y2K bug which caused worldwide panic around the turn of the millennium.

This contemporary work for clarinet and piano features very virtuosic playing and extended techniques to create beautiful bird-like sounds. The Japanese composer, Takashi Yoshimatsu, takes inspiration from jazz, electronic music, and progressive rock styles to form his unique sound.

This work for clarinet and live electronics (using Max MSP) was written by my good friend Nicholas Villane in 2022. It is a set of love letters to the clarinet, and an experiment in electro-acoustic music.

Arnold Cooke’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in Bb Major is a substantial 20-minute work for the clarinet, written in a neo-classical style. Arnold Cooke, an English composer, draws great inspiration from his teacher, Paul Hindemith, and even quoted one of his pieces in this work.

This recording is from Grupo Jaraguá’s performance in the Blue Tavern in 2024. This is a jazzy take on the famous choro tune, Tico-Tico no Fubá. My arrangement of this tune was inspired by Paquito D’Rivera’s recording of the song, combined with traditional Brazilian percussion and choro forms.
